Driving licence on probation in Switzerland

Swiss probationary driving licence - Compulsory advanced training course (WAB course)

With your first category B (car) or A or A restricted (motorbike) driving licence, you have a probationary period of three years.

With the Swiss probationary driving licence, the rule is: zero alcohol while driving.

Anyone who already holds an unlimited category A or category B driving licence and wishes to acquire the other category will receive the licence for an unlimited period.

Swiss driving licence unlimited - no WAB course - not on probation

All persons born before 1 December 1987 and all persons who - regardless of their date of birth - submit an application for a category A (motorbike) or B (passenger car) learner's licence for the first time before 1 December 2005 will receive an unlimited driving licence and do not have to attend a WAB course.

Duration of the probationary period

The probationary period ends after three years if no offences against the traffic regulations are committed that lead to the withdrawal of the driving licence and thus to the extension of the probationary period.

You will find the end date of your probationary period on your driving licence under point 4b «Expiry date».

Obtaining a permanent driving licence

The permanent Swiss driving licence will only be sent to you by the Road Traffic Licensing Office once the probationary period has expired and you have proven that you have attended the one-day WAB advanced training course. You do not have to do anything.

Duration of the WAB training course.

The advanced training course lasts 7 hours and is completed in one day. According to the law, this WAB course day must be attended within 12 months of acquiring the temporary Swiss driving licence - otherwise the police can fine you in an inspection! The course organiser can be chosen freely.

Content of the WAB course day

Since 2020, the previous two WAB days have been optimised and merged into a single compact day.

In one part of the course, you will learn how to recognise dangerous situations before they arise and how to avoid them. You will experience emergency braking, distance and cornering on closed-off tracks. At the same time, you will increase your safety in road traffic and learn to better assess yourself and your vehicle.

Road safety is always the top priority. That's why the other part of the course raises your awareness of your driving skills, optimises your road sense and promotes cooperative driving. And you learn to drive in an environmentally friendly and cost-saving way (“clever driving”), based on the latest scientific principles.

The aspects of environmentally friendly driving are summarised in the daily balance sheet, rounding off this eventful day for you.

Costs of driver training

The costs are roughly the equivalent of 5 to 6 driving lessons at a driving school.

Consequences of not completing the WAB further training course

The advanced training course must be completed during the probationary period. If the advanced training course is not completed, the licence holder loses all driving authorisations entered on the licence. Upon request and subject to a fee, the further training can be completed within a grace period of three months. A separate licence to drive motor vehicles - limited to the date of the course - will be issued by the Road Traffic Office. Anyone wishing to drive motor vehicles in the main or sub-categories after the grace period has expired unused must submit a new application for a learner's licence and pass the regular driving test (theory and practice) again.

Driving licence withdrawal during the probationary period

If the holder of the probationary driving licence commits an offence that leads to the licence being withdrawn, the probationary period is extended by one year and a new temporary driving licence is issued accordingly. If the licence withdrawal ends after the probationary period, a new probationary driving licence will also be issued; the probationary period ends one year after its date of issue.

If the licence holder commits a second offence that results in the licence being revoked, the licence expires. This also applies if the licence has already been issued for an indefinite period (in ignorance of the second offence). Cancellation applies to all categories and sub-categories. The same applies to the special categories if the licence holder cannot guarantee that he/she will not commit any offences with vehicles in the special categories in the future. Otherwise, the licensing authority will issue a driving licence for the special categories.

Consequences of a new cancellation of the driving licence

A new learner's licence can be applied for at the earliest after a waiting period of at least one year since the offence that led to the cancellation of the driving licence was committed. In addition, a traffic psychologist's report confirming fitness to drive must be submitted. After passing the driving test, a new probationary driving licence will be issued.
