Your path from a Swiss learner's licence to a driving licence

1. First aid course (Nothelferkurs)

Do you already have a valid emergency helper's card ?

If yes, then you can continue with position 2.

Otherwise you must complete the emergency helper course. Nothelferkurs.

When applying for a learner's licence, you must present your original emergency helper's certificate. The course lasts 10 lessons and is valid for 6 years. (You can complete the course from the age of 14).

2. Application form (Gesuchsformular)

Download the form “Lernfahrgesuch Kanton Zürich / Learner driving application Canton Zurich“ or “Lernfahrgesuch Kanton Thurgau / Learning driving application Canton Thurgau“ from the Road Traffic Office. Please only use white paper for printing. You can also obtain the learner driving application from the city/municipal administration or from any road traffic office.

If your last sight and hearing test was more than 2 years ago, you must have a new test carried out by your family doctor, an ophthalmologist or optician. The test results are entered on this form.

If you want, you can check your eyes briefly here. "Augen Online Check / Eyes Online Check"

    New regulations as of 1.3.2024 Eye test (Cat. A, B, A1, B1, F, G or M)
  • When submitting an application for a learner's licence, an eye test is no longer required if a valid learner's or driving licence in one of these categories is available.

Have the completed form confirmed in person at the residents' registration office at your place of residence and present a valid identity card and 1 colour passport photo (size: 35x45 mm). Do not forget your signature.

Send the application form for the theory test with emergency helper's licence to the road traffic office.

3. Basic theory exam (Theorie Prüfung)

The Road Traffic Licensing Office will check whether your learner driver application is in order and send you a form to register for the theory test.

You send this application back to the road traffic office when you have prepared for the test. The theory test takes place 3-4 weeks later.

You will be tested on 50 questions within 45 minutes. Please note that several answers may be correct.
The test is passed if the maximum of 15 error points has not been exceeded.
The theory test can be repeated as often as required.

Once you have passed the test, you will receive your learner's licence by post 2-3 days later.

You can find a demo version of the theory test (CUT) from the Road Traffic Office here

4. Learner's driving permit (Lernfahrausweis LFA)

After passing the theory exam, the Road Traffic Office (StVA) will send you the learner's permit, which is valid for 24 months and cannot be extended, right on your birthday.

Now you may drive with a suitable accompanying person / geeigneten Begleitperson who has held a driver's license for at least 3 years and is at least 23 years old.

  • The private vehicle must be in good technical condition and the auxiliary and parking brake (handbrake) must be located in the middle of the two front seats, easily accessible to the accompanying person.
  • Be careful with electronic handbrakes, certain car brands override the electronic handbrake with the accelerator pedal. Please test!
  • According to the law, busy roads may only be driven on after a certain period of training, and highways can only be accessed once the candidate is ready for the driving test.

5. Driving lessons (practical training / Praktische Ausbildung)

We offer you driving lessons with gearshift and automatic transmission as a subscription from CHF 73.-.

6. The obligatory driving sensitization course (Verkehrskunde) VKU

During the period of validity of the LFA the obligatory driving sensitization course (Verkehrskunde) must be attended. To derive optimal benefit from the VKU, you should attend the course at the beginning of your practical training. Proof of course attendance must be provided when registering for the practical driving test.

The course location is situated in the "Insider Park" development, opposite the Dübendorf train station (near platform 4). Please be in the classroom 15 minutes before the course starts.

Course duration: 2 x 4 lessons, Saturday from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM (with a lunch break).

7. Practical exam - Exam requirements (Praktische Prüfung - Prüfungsanforderungen)

The registration is done by your driving instructor. The exam locations in our canton of Zurich are: Bülach, Hinwil, Winterthur, and in the canton of Thurgau: Frauenfeld. If the LFA expires without you having passed the practical exam, immediately order a new one; the completed VKU is valid indefinitely.
After successfully passing the exam, you will receive your driver's license in credit card format by mail.

8. Mandatory training course WAB - Probationary driving licence for 3 years. (Weiterbildungskurs)

The further training for new drivers lasts 7 hours and is conducted in one day. This training course must be completed within 12 months after the issuance of the driver's license during the three-year probationary period. Anyone who does not attend this course will have their driver's license revoked.

We work together with the organisers “DriveZ Kanton Zürich“ , “Verkehrssicherheitszentrum Thurgau AG“ and “Driving-Park AG Winterthur“, these are conducted at the WAB course at the military airfield in Dübendorf, in Weinfelden TG - at the Ohrbühl facility.

When do you not need the theory exam, first aid course and traffic education course?

Those who already hold the Category A1 / A (motorcycle) license do not need a first aid course, a road safety course or a theory test.

The obligatory driving sensitization course (Verkehrskunde) VKU may only be attended if one possesses a valid learner's driving permit LFA.

Learner's permit at 17 years old since 2021.

What changes for you?

Since 2021, you can drive with a suitable accompanying person starting at the age of 17, but you must complete a learning phase of 12 months before you can take the test.

The goal of this learning phase is to gain experiences. We recommend that you complete a professional basic training at the beginning of your driving education with us, and that you can deepen this knowledge with private driving.

Everyone who acquires a learner's licence before the age of 20 must complete this 12-month learning phase.
