Control Drive with a foreign driving licence in Switzerland

Holders of driving licences from an EU/EFTA country are exempt from a test drive. Holders of driving licences from other countries are obliged to complete a test drive. There are also other important factors that you should be aware of.

If there are concerns about the suitability of a driver, a test drive may be ordered to clarify the necessary measures.

In practice, the test drive is an instrument for clarifying the fitness to drive of

  • Applicants for the test-free transfer of foreign driving licences,
  • Senior citizens,
  • Drivers with medical restrictions.

Because it would be too risky for all parties involved to carry out a test drive without first clarifying the minimum medical requirements if the fitness to drive of senior citizens is in doubt, it only takes place in the canton of Zurich

  • after prior examination at the Institute of Forensic Medicine (IRM-UZH), Department of Traffic Medicine and
  • in the presence of a medical specialist from the IRM-UZH and an expert from the Road Traffic Office.

Did you get your driving licence abroad?

Then you can exchange your foreign driving licence for a Swiss one under the following conditions:

1. if you first took the driving test abroad and only then received the Swiss settlement permit, or
2. if you had your residence abroad for at least 12 months and acquired your driving license during this time.

In both cases, you can take a control drive and receive your Swiss driving licence after passing it.

Please note that you must register with the relevant road traffic office within 12 months of receiving your permanent residence permit.

The control drive is also a EXAMINATION!

I therefore recommend that you take the necessary driving lessons to bring you back up to the "current" level!

Important: A failed or missed test drive cannot be repeated and will result in a driving ban in Switzerland and your foreign driving licence will be revoked. In this case, you would have to acquire the entire category again from the beginning (First aid course, Basic theory exam, the obligatory driving sensitization course, practical driving test).
